My bonsai loses all its leaves...

Here is a very widespread problem! Be sure that if your bonsai is not an outdoor deciduous tree, and if we are not in November, this fall of leaves is abnormal.

However, to lose its leaves is, for a plant, the most general symptom of physiological disorder.
Finally, this loss of foliage can be caused by:

a blow of thirst,
a luminous exposure insufficient,
an attack of parasites,
too frequent watering.

In short, the only certainty is that something does not go! To know what exactly, others should be observed symptoms.

In any case, the problem is almost never caused by a disease. Those are fortunately very rare, and if they are often called upon is to avoid calling in question the quality of the care taken to the bonsai.

FAQ Summary

Frequency of watering

It is impossible to answer this question. Indeed, the water consumption of a bonsai depends on the season, the luminous exposure, but also on the size of the pot, the nature of the soil, etc... One cannot thus plan watering.

To seriously decide need or not for sprinkling your bonsai, for testing the state of the soil. If it is dry, the tree obviously will need water. If the surface of the soil is wet, and if preceding watering were made correctly - i.e. if the whole of the mound were hydrated, the tree does not need anything yet.
Check the state of the soil every day, or several times per day if
the weather is very hot, and sprinkle when it is necessary - only if
it is necessary - and not because it is the most convenient moment for
you. Do not let the routine settle!

Should fertilizer be given?

It is true, the bonsais are small.

It is because one cultivates them in small pots and that they are cut that their growth is slowed down and that they remain small.

In any case, their size is not explained by the absence of food!

The small quantity of soil contained in the pot, the fast impoverishment of this soil because of frequent watering imply on the contrary which the bonsais must be more nourished that the other plants.

The light

This question makes sense only if you train indoor bonsais. The outdoor bonsais should never be placed inside.

Even if you think that your apartment is very clear, even if the exposure is good, always remember that the bonsais are trees. In their medium of origin, they live outside where the luminous intensity is stronger than on your premise.

Rather than to decide if your apartment or your house is sufficiently clear, look at how your bonsai goes.

Pinching and pruning

This question often worries the neophytes. Indeed, it is thanks to trimming which the bonsais are so beautiful. But, unless really doing anything, the life of your tree does not depend on your way of cutting it. On the other hand, it depends on your way of sprinkling it and of nourishing it! And if it is an indoor bonsai, luminous exposure.

You concentrate on the light, water and food. If your care is good in these fields, your bonsai will be healthy and strong. Then the question of trimming will arise so that there remains beautiful and balanced.

Lack of care

Nobody would leave his dog, his cat or his child without care, even a few days. Your bonsai has this of common run with a dog or a child who it is alive and is not autonomous. Every day, your bonsai must be supervised to satisfy its needs. This assiduity prohibits the absences.

Also, when you go away, entrust your small tree to somebody in whom you can have really confidence. Watering must be given advisedly. Remember that your neighbor is not inevitably voluntary, and that if it is voluntary, it is not inevitably qualified!

FAQ summary

Why the bonsais remain do small?

The guiding principle of the art of Bonsai is to raise the tree in a small pot. The growth of the roots is then braked, and the air part of the tree grows then less and less quickly. In nature, there are trees living between stones or in a soil pocket. They develop very little, like a bonsai in its pot.
